Hawaiian Tapa design #1 cuff bangle engraved with diamond shapes. Tapa designs reflect the traditional Polynesian designs, usually a repeating geometric pattern, used in old Polynesia to decorate tapa cloth (also called "kapa" in Hawaiian). Tapa or kapa cloth was made from tree bark and was primarily used for clothing before it was replaced with modern textiles such as cotton and other fabrics. Tapa cloth was painted and decorated by rubbing, stamping, stenciling, smoking, or dyeing.
